Costa Rica.

Costa Rica. I’d never imagined it would be on my travel list, but when the World Championship in Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) called, I couldn’t resist the adventure. What started as a simple trip to compete turned into an unforgettable journey through hidden corners, charming stays, and unexpected beauty. Here’s a peek into my whirlwind experience in this Central American paradise.
Our flight touched down late at night in San José, Costa Rica’s bustling capital. However, the city at night was almost dead. There was nobody outside, and the streets felt eerily empty—a stark contrast to the constant buzz of Panama City, where life continues long after the sun sets. San José seemed like a city of hidden stories, but I’d have to wait until morning to uncover any of them.
The next day, we embarked on the scenic drive to La Fortuna, home to the famous Arenal Volcano. The winding roads offered stunning views, with lush green mountains and vibrant tropical foliage framing every turn. Partway through, we spotted a sign for a butterfly sanctuary and decided to stop. Walking among these colorful, delicate creatures felt like stepping into a fairytale. Butterflies in every hue floated around us, landing gently on flowers and occasionally on our hands. It was a peaceful and surprising break on the journey.
As we reached La Fortuna, the backdrop of the Arenal Volcano dominated the skyline. Our stop for the evening? The natural hot springs. There's something truly magical about soaking in warm waters surrounded by the sights and sounds of the rainforest. The heat of the springs soothed our travel-weary bodies, while the sounds of birds and rustling leaves created a calming symphony. It felt like nature’s spa—exactly what we needed after hours on the road.
Our accommodation in La Fortuna was no ordinary stay—it was a treehouse Airbnb tucked high among the trees. Perched above the ground, with views of the dense jungle all around, it felt like we were living in a dream. At night, the symphony of nature’s nightlife—crickets, frogs, and distant howler monkeys—lulled us to sleep. It was as close to nature as one could get, and yet still incredibly comfortable.
The next few days were dedicated to exploring the natural beauty of Costa Rica. We hiked through several national parks, each offering its own unique landscapes: dense jungles, towering waterfalls, and serene lagoons. Every path we took seemed to lead to a new discovery. The biodiversity here was astounding.
Our mornings started with a traditional Costa Rican breakfast: gallo pinto (rice and beans), scrambled eggs, plantains, and fresh fruit. Simple yet hearty, it fueled us for the day ahead. Dinners, too, were a delight—local dishes like casado (a mixed plate of meat, rice, beans, salad, and plantains) gave us a real taste of the country’s food culture.
On one of our last days, we made the drive to the coast, hoping for a relaxing beach escape. We arrived in a town that had once been the go-to spot for tourists. You could still see echoes of its former glory—faded signs for beachside hotels, weathered surf shops, and the occasional beachfront restaurant that had seen better days. The beaches were still stunning, but the town itself had lost much of its shine. Yet, in a way, that added to its charm. It was like stepping back into the past, visiting a place that had once thrived but now quietly existed in its own forgotten beauty.
Our last out-of-the-way stay was a barn nestled high in the mountains, complete with a hot tub overlooking the surrounding valleys. There was something incredibly serene about sitting in that tub, steam rising around us, as the mountain breeze rolled in. It was a rustic stay, but it offered one of the most peaceful moments of the trip. We felt like we had the entire mountain to ourselves, far from the bustling tourist spots, completely immersed in nature.
Finally, it was time to return to San José for the reason we’d come in the first place: the OCR World Championships. The city, now alive in the daylight, had an electric energy as athletes from around the world gathered for the event. Competing in the championship was an exhilarating experience, but equally as exciting was seeing how the city came alive with the buzz of the competition. San José, while a bit rough around the edges, had its own charm that we hadn’t noticed on our sleepy arrival.
Looking back, Costa Rica surprised me in many ways. It was more expensive than I had anticipated, and there was less to do in some areas than I had imagined. That said, the country’s beauty is undeniable—from the lush rainforests and tranquil hot springs to the forgotten beach towns and peaceful mountain retreats. It may not have been a place I would have visited if not for the World Championship, but I’m so glad I did. Costa Rica, with its mix of natural wonders and hidden gems, offered an adventure I won’t soon forget.
So, while it wasn’t the typical adventure-packed trip I’m used to, it was an experience filled with serene moments, unexpected discoveries, and a glimpse into a quieter side of life in this beautiful country. Would I go back? Perhaps not immediately. But would I recommend it? Absolutely—especially for those looking for a blend of nature, relaxation, and a little adventure on the side.
