We actually wanted to climb the Hoher Dachstein. However, due to the current weather situation (snow, warm summer, etc.), this was not possible for us.
Various routes up the Dachstein massif were closed, the landlord laughed at Lena on the phone and immediately canceled the beds...
alternatives? Not so easy. Many huts have already closed, the others are occupied. Finally we find beds at the Similaunhütte.
So we start at 3.30 a.m. in Stuttgart. We head towards Vent. Arrive in Vent around 9am.
The sky is cloudy and it's 4 degrees. We manage the ascent to the Martin-Busch-Hütte in less than 2 hours, always with the goal in mind. At the hut we take a short break and get our rain jackets out - the clouds are hanging lower now, a wind is picking up.
From the hut we follow the path in the direction of the Ötzi site. It starts snowing. Relatively weak at first, then stronger and stronger. The wind is biting, visibility is getting worse. We trudge on, always uphill. We come to a junction - right to Ötzi, left to the hut. Due to the general situation and the increasing snowfall, we decide to turn left to the hut.
Arriving at the Similaunhütte (3019m) the visibility was almost zero. So get in there and warm up. I was completely covered in snow and wet.
First check in and hang everything (including me) to dry. Then something to eat. The weather outside just didn't get any better. We make our way to Ötzi anyway. Michael has never been there and we finally wanted to see the right way to get there. Julius prefers to stay in the cabin and rest.
Behind the hut we climb up the ridge in a dense snowstorms. We lose the marked path relatively quickly. It doesn't matter, we keep going - we'll find our way again. Further up the ridge we find the right path again and follow it along the ridge and then slightly downhill over hill and dale and lots of snow. Pretty slippery.
Luckily we switched to ski gear, it keeps you warm and dry.
Our schedule is that we can walk 1.5 hours in the direction of Ötzi and then have to turn back so we don't miss dinner. Unfortunately, after almost 1.5 hours we are still a long way from where Ötzi was found it and it is with a heavy heart that we have to return. The weather is just not kind to us. There is now about 10cm of fresh snow and the way back is not getting any easier given the conditions.
We arrive back at the hut shortly before 6 p.m. Quick clean, warm up and dry. Prepare the backpack for tomorrow and then off to dinner. 3 course menu. First a soup, then a main course of your choice and finally cake. Plus radler, of course. Half-board with an overnight stay costs €72... quite expensive.
At 8 p.m. we go to bed, the day was long and exhausting. It won't be any easier tomorrow.
